Today’s researchers use a variety of scientific techniques along with others test, predict behavior and explain it. †¢ Experimental method involving manipulating one’s ability to chance to determine if the changes in one’s ability to change cause changes in another’s ability to change. †¢ Correlational studies look for relationships among the different changes. With three areas of possible outcomes of correlation studies: a negative, positive, or no correlation. The correlation strength has a range from –1.00 to +1.00. †¢ Longitudinal research is used to discover relationships between the ability to change that are not related to various backgrounds and the ability to change. The length of longitudinal studies can last 20 years or more observational research involves studying the same individuals over a longer than normal period of time. Data may be gathered repeatedly in some cases, there is generally a collection of information at the beginning of the study, and throughout the study additional information is collected as needed.
